Subject: Decision Session - Baysdale Ave, Cavendish Grove
and Tranby Avenue proposed parking restrictions
Dear All,
I have just received a letter regarding the decision session for the proposed parking restrictions on Baysdale Avenue, Cavendish Grove and Tranby Avenue to which I am unable to attend.
To be frank, I've attended decision sessions in the past and it hasn't made any difference to the outcome. In my opinion these sessions are just a tick box exercise for the council to say they have consulted.
The ever expanding university is the key issue here that needs to be addressed. The students I have spoken with, who use our streets as a carpark, are as frustrated as the residents. The parking charges are too high for students attending lectures and there is no parking made available for those living on campus.
Only this week I witnessed a student getting his bike out of the boot of his car to travel to his accommodation on campus. This clearly shows that the implementation of the restrictions will just move the problem on.
There is a huge, long unused road on Heslington East called Lakeside Way, where there are no houses, which could be made available for students to park on the street. Its not on a bus route and could accommodate all the cars which are currently parking in our area, but the council are not willing to think outside the box or approach the university to make this happen.
The Grimston Bar Park and Ride car park also has ample available space. No one wants to use it around here as it doesn't even go as far as the station!
Instead I feel the council would rather impose a restriction which impacts the council tax paying residents. If we don't agree to this the only other option is that we have to pay for respark. We only have issues as a result of the Respark scheme in Badger Hill. The knock on effect of Respark schemes being introduced is what I believe the council wants as it generates income.
I oppose the restrictions in our area as it doesn't solve the problem and implore you to work with the university to find an alternative solution. The residents of Osbaldwick and Badger Hill should not be the victims of the University of York meeting its sustainability strategy targets.
Yours sincerely,
Amy Reynolds
